Hi, I’m Carla
I’m deeply passionate about women’s choices when it comes to pregnancy and birth and feel privileged to be working with women and their families in the way that I do. Motherhood is very rewarding, but most of us experience difficult times along the way. Supporting women through their own mothering journey, however that looks, is hugely important to me. Pregnancy and birth is the beginning of a life-long learning curve and sharing this with a community of like-minded women to learn from, grow with and support makes it all that much easier.
When I was pregnant with my first child I knew what I wanted for my birth but I didn’t know how I was going to achieve it. A friend recommended HypnoBirthing and we attended a weekend course. I only found out much later that HypnoBirthing – The Mongan Method was a 4 (now 5) week course, not a weekend thing.
The course definitely helped me and my partner feel more confident about the birth but I made one big mistake. I thought my birth was about me… that if I was prepared, if I was educated, if I did all the practice then everything would be great, right?
Umm, wrong! I didn’t know how big of an impact birth environment would have on my birth and I didn’t listen to myself when I felt frustrated and angry after ante-natal appointments. These two things (where I chose to give birth and who I chose to be my care provider) had such a huge impact and I ended up with a traumatic birth experience with guilt, regret, sadness and ongoing physical pain as a result.
It was difficult for me to deal with what I felt was failure, I never fail! But over time and through chatting with midwives and other health professionals I came to understand that it wasn’t me or my body that ‘failed’… it was the system that failed me.
I didn’t want this to happen to other women and I loved what HypnoBirthing had taught me so I set about learning how to teach HypnoBirthing (the Mongan Method) to couples in and around Brisbane.
I’ve since had two more babies. Two A-mazing birth experiences. These births were empowering, powerful and healing for me. I used HypnoBirthing tools, I chose a private midwife and I birthed my babies at home. It was right for me.
HypnoBirthing isn’t all that I do. Those that know me well know that I’m a self-confessed placenta nerd and have been encapsulating placentas since 2013. This was back when even mentioning placenta was like… whaat??? And if you’re thinking, did I do it myself? Yes I did, twice, and I’d do it again because the difference in recovery was phenomenal.
But about 6 months after the birth of my second child, I found myself on struggle street. I had a very active boy toddler, a newish baby and a small but busy business. My ‘good’ baby sleeper all of a sudden became a nightmare and I spent all my waking hours consulting google on baby sleep. I knew I didn’t want to use ‘cry it out’ so I went in search of something gentle and nurturing.
I discovered the International Maternity & Parenting Institute and studied for over 12 months to become a Holistic Sleep Consultant. It helped me immensely with my own kids and I began helping clients with their sleep issues too.
Two weeks before I graduated as a Holistic Sleep Consultant I found out I was pregnant again (insert gasp). But yay for me I was able to put E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. into practice from day one. My third was not an easy baby. She had colic and infant torticolis but with a holistic approach to sleep I was able to get her sleeping well at a time that was one of the hardest of my life. This saved my sanity and I can say with satisfaction that today with a 7 year old, 4 year old and an 18 month old… we’re all happy sleep campers!
What can I help you with?
